Sunday June 21st is the summer solstice the longest day and shortest night of the year. It is a very special event in Irish tradition and it was a very special night for us as we climbed the beautiful Knocknarea/Cnoc ne Ré to celebrate the end of our 500 mile challenge. We walked 99 miles today (159 km), bringing us to the grand finale total of 2,304 miles. (3,708 km). Considering that we had set out to walk 500 miles, this was an incredible feat carried out by our dedicated walkers. We are so grateful to each and every person who walked part of our journey with us, and we know that the children and staff of the schools in Kenya and Tanzania are even more grateful. We smashed the €6,000 mark in our fundraising which means that we can really make a difference in these schools. We are so grateful to all of you who supported our cause. As they say in East Africa "Asante Sana" -thank you, thank you thank you!!!

23 Jun 2020

Saturday was Day 41, the penultimate day of our walk for Tumu Tumu and Kisiju. Spirits are high in advance of our grand finale tomorrow and despite the high winds we walked 59 miles(95km), taking our total to 2,205 miles. (3,548km). It has been an enjoyable and very rewarding experience walking this challenge in lockdown to support such a worthy cause. We are really looking forward to getting the funding to the schools, particularly replacing the toilets in Tumu Tumu Deaf School. We know that the teachers and students in all three schools will really appreciate your support. Thank you to our amazing walkers and to our very generous donors. Ní neart go cur le chéile.

20 Jun 2020

Friday was Day 40 our of challenge and we walked 46 miles (74 km), taking our total to 2,146 miles. (3,453km). We are absolutely delighted to have exceeded out target she to see the donations still pouring in. The difference that this fund raising will make to the schools and the children is phenomenal. We are so proud of the students from Gaelscoil Chnoc na Ré and Mercy College Sligo who have worked so hard to maintain the links between the schools. Long may it continue!

20 Jun 2020

Thursday was Day 39 of our walk and the rain did not hold our walkers back. We covered 45 miles (72km), bringing us to 2,100 miles! (3,380km)The donations are still coming in and we are so grateful. Every little helps. Two years ago our fabulous local Kellogg's Cúl Camp organisers sponsored football kits for 2 full teams at Tumu Tumu Primary School. It was the first time that any of the children had ever owned sports gear. The school was exceptionally proud to have their team turned out so well. It was also very heartening to see the girls kitted out to play sports as this is not usually an option for girls in rural areas of Africa. Any spare money is spent on education so there is rarely any money for extracurricular activities. We hope to continue making a big difference in these childrens lives and with your support we will. Go raibh míle maith agaibh go léir.

20 Jun 2020

Wednesday Day 38 of our walk saw us walk 35 miles (56km), bringing us to 2,055 miles to date! (3,307 km). Fr Patrick Keaney has been running the Kisiju Mission in Tanzania since 2000. Born in Connemara he spent some of his early years in England before moving there permanently at the age of 16. He joined the Salvatorian order in 1977 and has been working and living in Tanzania since 1985. He has managed 3 missions in Tanzania during this time and cared for refugees crossing into Tanzania from the Mozambican War. He has toiled to set up clinics as well as tailoring and carpentry schools. In 2000, Fr Patrick moved to Kisiju where he purchased land drilled for water. He started a clinic, tailoring and carpentry school, a church and a kindergarten. His mission is to foster and develop self sufficiency in this remote part of Tanzania. Your donation will really help this mission school. Our thanks to our donors and our walkers.

19 Jun 2020

Tuesday Day 37 of our walking challenge brought fantastic news. We smashed through our new target of 2,000 miles, walking 55 miles (88km) to hit the magic number of 2,020 miles. (3,250km) . We also hit our €5,000 euro target! What made this even more special was that Tuesday was the International Day of the African Child- a day founded in 1991 to encourage governments throughout the continent to provide quality education for children. Children like Joyce, pictured above, who is reared by her grandmother, struggle to be recognised and to receive the opportunity of education. We will keep walking until we ascend Knocknarea on June 21st and we would be so delighted if people would continue to donate to our cause. Every euro makes a difference. Go raibh míle maith agaibh go léir agus go n-éiri an bothar linn!

18 Jun 2020

Monday was Day 36 of the 500 mile challenge and we edged nearer to 2,000 miles. We walked 45 miles yesterday (72km) bringing us to a total of 1,965 miles. (3,162km). We are hoping for good weather for our socially distanced grand finale, climbing Knocknarea on Sunday June 21st, the longest day of the year! Both Tumu Tumu Schools are named after Tumu Tumu Hill in the Central Highlands of Kenya. It is very reminiscent of Knocknarea but much more heavily forested. There is no such thing as the longest day of the year in Tumu Tumu, as Kenya lies on the equator. It is bright from 6am to 6pm every day and many children still have to walk part of the way home from school in the dark. Our daily walks have reminded us of how so many children in East Africa have to walk several kilometres to and from school every day to get an education. If they can walk, so can we!! Thank you to our walkers and our donors!

18 Jun 2020

Sunday was Day 35 of our 500 mile challenge and despite thunder and lightning storms the team walked 68 miles (109 km), taking us to 1,919 miles. (3.088km). We have 2,000 miles closely in our sights! Tumu Tumu Primary School remains closed because of COVID 19 and Principal Mrs Wachiûri has been exceptionally worried about the welfare and the education of her pupils. The vast majority have no access to the internet and the school itself has no computers. At the moment she is trying to get funds together to buy revision books for the children, and deliver them to the rural farms where they live. These children will still have to sit state exams in September and she is anxious to alleviate their worries. Some of the funds raised here will help with the cost of these revision books. We are grateful to our donors and our walkers.

16 Jun 2020

Saturday was Day 34 of our walk and in beautiful weather some of us set out to walk from Collooney to Dromahair on the Sligo Way. Walking 2 metres apart in some of the most beautiful scenery in Ireland, we headed through Union Wood and on to Ballygawley Wood, up the slopes of Slieve Deane and on to the shores of Lough Lumann. After a short lunch we rambled on through the forest to reach Slish Wood. Travelling along the shores of Lough Gill we walked through leafy forest climbing upwards along the boardwalk. Spectacular views of the lake and surrounding areas mesmerised us until we reached the captivating Lake Ise of Innisfree. After a short break on the lakeshore, we set off again on our way again to Dromahair, passing Creevlea Abbey. Several other walkers walked varying distances and we had a daily total of 104 miles (167km) bringing us to 1,851 miles in total.(2,979km). We are very proud of our walkers and very grateful to our donors. With your help we will hit our fundraising target by Midsummers Night.

15 Jun 2020

Yesterday,Friday, was Day 33 of our walk for our schools in Tumu Tumu and Kisiju. We were saving ourselves somewhat for walking part of the Sligo Way on Saturday, but still walked a respectable 32 miles (51.5 km) taking us to 1747 miles (2811.5 km!) Tumu Tumu Deaf School is still without a water supply, and our main aim over the next year is to build a rainfall well there. Some of the funds raised here will go towards starting to draw up the plans and the initial survey. Another portion of the funds will go towards the urgent provision of toilets and dormitory accommodation. Principal of Tumu Tumu Deaf School, Bwana Nabea has conveyed his sincere thanks on behalf of the students and teachers, to all the walkers and donors. Your support to their school is invaluable. Asante Sana-go raibh míle maith agaibh go léir!.

14 Jun 2020

Thursday was Day 32 of our walk, and in beautiful sunshine, we walked 56 miles (90km), taking us to 1715 miles (2760km). Walking in lockdown has really shown us the beauty that lies on our doorstep and how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful part of the world. This picture of Ballisodare Bay from the top of Knocknarea, looks like it could be in the Caribbean! We continue to thank our generous donors for supporting our cause. We are ever hopeful of hitting our target of raising 5000 euro by Midsummer's Day. Go n-éirí an bothar linn!

14 Jun 2020

Wednesday was Day 31 of our 500 mile plus challenge and we walked 36.5 miles (59km), taking us to a total of 1.659 miles! (2,670 km) The pressure is on to hit 2,000 miles and €5,000 before midsummers day in 10 days time! The lovely young ladies at Kisiju Mission Trade School are still working hard to provide masks for healthcare professionals in the region. This is a huge achievement and will be of enormous benefit in the fight against COVID in a country which has a severe lack of water let alone hand sanitiser. The trade school gives hundreds of young women the opportunity of a technical education with a skilled trade and a means of income. Some of our funds will support the continued teaching at the school during these challenging times.

12 Jun 2020

Tuesday Day 30 of our walk brought chilly weather but our walkers still clocked up 43 miles ( 69 km) taking us to 1,622.5 miles in total. (2,610km). The students at the Trade School at Kisiju Mission have been very busy turning out hundreds of masks for use by healthcare staff and patients in their region. This is an excellent example of the self sufficiency which was the original intention of this project. Well done to the fantastic students on their amazing work. We are delighted to support this truly worthy cause.

10 Jun 2020

Today, Monday, was Day 29 of our walk. Sunny skies returned and our lockdown limit was extended to 20km. Some of our walkers saw the sea for the first time in 3 months. We walked 47 miles today (75.6km), taking us to 1,579.6 miles in total. (2,542km).Curfew in Kenya and Tanzania has meant that many parents cannot work and therefore will have no money for school fees when schools reopen. We aim to subsidise school books and stationery so that we can remove that cost from parents and we also aim to alleviate the contribution that parents have to make for the upkeep of the school. Every cent will be well spent! Thank you to our supporters and our walkers. Go raibh míle maith agaibh go léir.

09 Jun 2020

Day 28 (Sunday), marked 4 weeks of walking. When we started our challenge we hoped for 500 miles and maybe 500 more. Well we walked '500 More' twice!, Today we raced through the 1,500miles mark. We walked 51 miles (82m km),today bringing us to a total of1,532 miles. (2,465km). We now have our sights on 2,000 miles before the Summer Solstice on June 21st.Thank you to all our walkers and to our generous donors.

08 Jun 2020

Day 27, Saturday was a cold and windy day but that did not deter our walkers who covered 68 miles today bringing us to 1,481 miles in total. The Kariûki family from Tumu Tumu are central to our projects in Tumu Tumu. When Dara originally travelled to Tumu Tumu in the days before mobile phones and e mail, she met Charity Kariûki a young nurse of the same age training at Tumu Hospital, and the rest is history. Many visitors from Sligo have been welcomed to the Kariûki home in Tumu Tumu ever since including the large contingent from Mercy College Sligo in 2019. Charity and her family all attended Tumu Tumu Primary School and continue to have a great committment to the Primary School and to the Deaf School which was originally built on land donated by Charity's grandfather for that specific purpose. As a specialist ENT nurse Charity has a personal interest in supporting the children in the Deaf school and spends most of her spare time working on our project.

07 Jun 2020

Friday was Day 26 of our walk and was a hugely successful day all round. We walked 44 miles (70.8km), bring us to 1,413.5 miles, (2,274km), only leaving a small sprint to the 1,500 mile mark. We also crashed through the €4,000 euro mark in donations. We are exceptionally grateful to all of you who have donated to our cause. We are overwhelmed with the support we have received so far and are really buoyed that so many of you have given your hearts and your supports to these amazing children in East Africa who struggle against the odds to learn. We know for sure that they will be forever grateful to you. Pictured above is our very dear friend Sammy Kariuki whom we first met as a small boy in Tumu Tumu Primary School almost thirty years ago. A little help from us many years ago was all it took for this very clever little boy to become one of Nairobi's finest solicitors today. Sammy is a regular visitor back to Tumu Tumu where he works tirelessly to oversee our charities and to ensure that every cent you donate goes directly to benefit the children.

06 Jun 2020

Thursday was Day 25 of our 500 mile challenge. We walked 56 miles (90km),bringing us to a total 1369.5 miles. (2,203km) We are well on the way to completing our third 500 miles. In rural Tanzania, children who are out of school have no choice but to work long hours to help support their families. Although schooling is mandatory for children aged 7-15 in Tanzania, universal primary education has not yet been achieved. School fees and compulsory purchase of shoes are amongst the barriers. Schools like Kisiju Mission School are attempting to combat this and with your support we can help them. Many thanks to our walkers and donors.

05 Jun 2020

Today, Wednesday was Day 24 of our walk. Although sunny, there was quite a breeze especially near the sea, but this did not deter our walkers! We covered an amazing 50.5 miles (85 km) today taking us to 1,313.5 miles. (2,113 km). Schools in East Africa remain shut and pupils are uncertain about their future especially with the diversion of Government funds to COVID 19 and flood disaster relief. We are very happy that we will be able to use our funds to ensure the repair and development of our schools so that they can reopen and children can return to education and self sufficiency. If you are reading our blog for the first time we would ask you to please help us to support these children. Please give what you can to give these children a little leg up on the education ladder. We should remind ourselves that "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world" (Nelson Mandela).

04 Jun 2020

Day 23 of our walk was yesterday Tuesday. We walked 45 miles (72.5km), bringing us to 1,263 miles. (2,032 km). Thankfully it was a little cooler and easier to walk. One thing we have all come to realise is how many beautiful places we have to walk within our 5km lockdown zone. We are seeing the beauty on our doorstep for the first time! Well done walkers and thank you to our kind donors! Go raibh maith agaibh.

04 Jun 2020

Day 22 of our walk was Bank Holiday Monday another sunny day perfect for walking. We clocked up 65 miles today (104.5km) bringing our total to 1,218 miles! (1,960lm). The determination of our walkers is unfailing. COVID-19 is really taking hold in East Africa now and funding to rural areas has taken a huge hit. Our funds will go directly to our causes and to specified projects which will directly benefit not just the current pupils but many years of future pupils. We are so grateful to our donors.

02 Jun 2020

Sunday, Day 21, saw us walk 61miles (98km), bringing us to 1,153 miles in total. (1,855km) News from Kenya this week shows people under the threat not just of COVID-19 but also serious locust plagues which have hit the north of the country as well as devastating floods which have left thousands of families homeless. Locusts in Kenya are currently ravaging crops to the extent of eating daily the amount of food that would feed 2,500 people. However bad things are in Europe and Ireland, the triple devastation in East Africa is unimaginable. Now, more than ever, we will continue our fundraising drive. We thank you sincerely for your support.

02 Jun 2020

Saturday was Day 20 of our walk and on another scorching hot day, the team covered 57.5 miles (91.7km) bringing us to 1,092 miles! (1,757 km). Pictured here in Nairobi Kenya, is the Mercy College team who visited Tumu Tumu High school on a cultural exchange last October. During this trip they visited and undertook a sponsorship committment to Tumu Tumu Deaf School. They also visited Tumu Tumu Primary School which is twinned with Gaelscoil Chnoc na Ré. Thanks to all our supporters and to our determined walkers!

31 May 2020

Yesterday, Friday, was Day 19 of our challenge. The team walked a fantastic 69 miles (111km), racing through the 1000 mile mark to 1034.5 miles in total. (1,665km) There is no stopping us! We are now aiming to hit 1,500 miles which is a quarter of the actual walking distance from Ireland to Kenya! We are delighted with the response to our challenge and appreciate all the donations. Go raibh míle maith agaibh. Your money will go directly to our schools and we will be able to rebuild toilets, build dining rooms and kitchens for the children and supply the equipment needed to start the kindergarten. We are one world in times like this. Ní neart go cur le chéile.

30 May 2020

Today was Day 18 of our walk and it was another beautiful sunny day. We covered 55 miles today (88.5km),bringing us to 965.5 miles in total. (1,554km). We will crash through the 1000 miles by the weekend. We also crashed through the €3,500 mark in donations so we are 70% of the way to our target of €5000 euro. The scorching heat today brought to mind the lack of water access at Tumu Tumu Deaf School and the hope that some of the money raised here can start our project to build a well there. Thank you for donating to our cause. We will keep on walking!

29 May 2020

Today was Day 17 of our walk for Tumu Tumu Primary School, Tumu Tumu Deaf School and Kisiju Mission School. On a scorching hot day we covered 71 miles (114km) bringing us to an incredible total of 910 miles! (1,464km)!. Well done to our dedicated walkers. Currently Tumu Tumu Primary is closed because of COVID 19 and teachers are working hard to support their pupils at home. It is a different support than the zoom lessons here. Teachers in Tumu Tumu are worried about their pupils getting enough food at home and having to assist their parents with manual work in order to earn money. Not all children will have easy access to running water let alone hand sanitiser so it is very difficult to protect themselves against coronavirus. The children at Tumu Tumu Deaf school are residential and many remain there during the crisis. Access to water is limited and teachers main focus is protecting the children as well as trying to ensure adequate food. Kisiju faces similar problems and like the Tumu Tumu Schools relies on help and support from local communities as well as fundraising. Many thanks to our donors for your continued support.

28 May 2020

Today was Day 16 and we walked 66 miles (106km) in glorious sunshine taking us to an incredible 839 miles, (1,350km). Schools in Africa are being hit hard by the economic effects of COVID-19 and usual fundraising on which so many schools depend, cannot take place. We are so grateful to our donors who have made it possible for us to raise much needed funds during lockdown to support our schools in Kenya and Tanzania.

27 May 2020

Today was Day 15 and we entered the third week of our walk buoyed by the generosity of our donors. We walked 65 miles today, (104km), making a total of 773 miles, (1,244km)! Pictured above is a classroom in Kisiju Mission school, a school set up to give girls an education, and an alternative to marrying very young. The school is in urgent need of basic items such as furniture, books and stationery and part of the funds raised here will go to this very deserving cause. Funding this school will help more than one generation, as girls in Tanzania who complete their primary education, are much more likely to send their own children to school.

26 May 2020

Yesterday, Sunday, was Day 14. Another great day for walking. We didn't have to wait for the Bank Holiday to break the 700 miles, because today we covered 76.5 miles, (123km), bringing us to to 708 miles, (1,139km). The 'One Thousand Miles' is within our sights! We want to thank all of you, our donors, for your incredible contribution to our cause. The difference each and every one of you will make to these children's lives, is worth more than words can say.

25 May 2020

Today, Saturday, was day 13, and the team covered 62 miles, (100km), an incredible total, bringing us to 659.5 miles (1,061km)! We will probably breach the 700 mile target before the Bank Holiday! Thanks to you all for the support. We are enjoying every minute of it!

25 May 2020

Today was day 12, and we covered 47 miles, (75.5km), taking us to 597.5 miles in total, ( 961.6km). We also crashed through the €3,000 euros mark in our fundraising! We are so grateful to all our donors. Even high winds and rain did not deter our walkers from their mission!!

23 May 2020

Day 11 was another great day of walking. We covered 45 miles (72.5km), bringing us to 550.5 miles in total. (886 km). Thanks to you, our very generous donors, we have raised almost €3,000 for our three schools. Wet and windy weather is approaching, but we won't let that deter us from our new target of 1,000 miles!

22 May 2020

Today is Day 10 and "We have walked 500 miles!!". Today we covered 48 miles ( 72km), bringing us to 505..5 miles (813.5km) smashing our target of 500 miles!! We are absolutely delighted with the support so far and having walked 500 miles, we are more determined than ever to "walk 500 more". To match our good news, we had great news from Kenya today. The children from Tumu Tumu Primary School achieved the highest marks in the province in their state exams, taken earlier this year, and the children from Tumu Tumu Deaf School achieved their second highest mark ever in the state exams! Despite all their challenges, these children strive to learn. They are well worth walking for! Thank you for your support.

21 May 2020

Today, Tuesday was Day 9 and the re-appearance of the good weather spurred us on to walk further and faster! We covered 54 miles today, (87km), bringing us to 457.5 miles in total! (736km). Our 500 mile target is so close, that we are tempted to walk 500 more! If waking means that we can continue to raise funds for the children in our three schools, who face huge challenges every day of their lives, then we can, and will, walk a thousand miles to bring help to their door. Thank you all for your support.

20 May 2020

Week 2. Day 8 is off to a great start with 58 miles (93km) covered today, bringing us to 403.5 miles ( 648.5km). We are walking apart, but together, walking as one to raise much needed funds for our schools in Kenya and Tanzania. Our daily walk symbolises the long walk, often several kilometres, that African children face to get to and from school everyday. Education is vital in these communities and we will continue our mission to support all the children in our sister schools. Our sincere thanks for your continued support.

19 May 2020

Day 7... Today was a cold showery day, but our walkers still managed to clock up 37 miles, (59.5km), bringing us to 345.5 miles (556km) in total. Today's picture is of the senior football team in Tumu Tumu Primary School, wearing their first ever football kits, kindly donated by Cúl Camps in 2019. A little bit of Ireland in Kenya! Thanks to all our donors for your support and we look forward to another week of walking.

18 May 2020

Day 6 results came in late last night. The walkers totalled a respectable 50 miles! (80.6km). It was the cloudiest day of the last 8 weeks, but the views were still lovely. In the last 6 days the Team have walked 308.5 miles, (496km), and raised €2,560 euros. We are all so grateful to you the donors. Very enthusiastic bunch of walkers, we might just keep going!

17 May 2020

Yesterday was Day 5 of the 500 miles! The team walked 58.5 miles (94km), making a total of 258.5 miles, (416 km). We are halfway to our current target. These Children from Tumu Tumu Deaf School will be delighted with the funds raised for them. Thanks to everyone.

16 May 2020

Day 4. A great day for walking today - 68 miles (109.5km), making a total of 200 miles! Thanks to all our donors today. We are very optimistic that we will be able to replace the toilets in the Deaf School before the summertime.

14 May 2020

Wednesday was Day 3 of the 500 miles... and the weather was beautiful. The team went all-out today, and clocked up 45 miles. (72.5km). In total over the three days, we have walked 132 miles! The view along the Riverside walk was lovely! Thanks for the continued support!

14 May 2020

Gaelscoil Chnoc na Ré Sligo is twinned with Tumu Tumu Primary School Kenya. Both schools have many similarities-they both have 252 pupils, they teach through their native language but all pupils are bilingual and some are trilingual, and both schools are situated beneath a famous hill, Knocknarea Sligo and Tumu Tumu Hill Kenya. However there are also differences! Pupils at Tumu Tumu School walk many kilometres to and from school and are at school from 8am to 4pm. The link between the schools has given children on both sides of the world the chance to get to know each other and learn about different cultures and traditions.

14 May 2020

Here are the results from Day 2 of our 500 miles! Our walkers have covered 45 miles! (72.4km). Many thanks to all our very generous donors. We've posted a picture of some of the children from Tumu Tumu School for the Deaf, a regional residential school for children with hearing impairment. Last week, in heavy monsoons, their main pit-latrines, (outdoor long drop toilets) collapsed, and some of the funds raised from this walk will be used to rebuild them.

13 May 2020

So, Day 1.. how did we do?! We asked our walkers to use an app to track their distance, and send it on to be counted......the grand total today was 42 Miles!! (67.6km)! Fantastic! Here is a beautiful picture from one of todays walkers. Thanks to all who supported us on our first day.

12 May 2020

Our challenge starts today Monday! The team will log their distance and we will total that each evening and post to our updates!
