Let me just start by saying, that I am not a runner. Last time I tried to run for more than 3 minutes without stopping, I almost passed out. And yet, on June 2nd at the Women's Mini Marathon, I'll be running 10KM for Purple House Cancer Support. At the time of writing this (January), it feels like it may as well be 100KM sprint. But I know I'll do it...
I know I'll do it, because in 1997 my mum was battling skin cancer. Just under a year before she lost her battle, she put on her runners and did the same race for the same charity. Purple House Cancer Support (then Bray Cancer Support) were a huge source of support for my mum and our entire family throughout her illness.
The notion of even getting out of the bed in the morning while going through what she went through boggles my mind, never mind getting active and turning her suffering into positivity. She was an absolute superhero.
If she did it, then I can do it.
A bit about the charity and what they do:
Purple House not only helped my mum, but other family members and friends in the Bray area. They do an INCREDIBLE amount.
Some services they offer:
- Counselling sessions
- Monthly support groups
- Transport services (to hospitals, clinics or the centre)
- Support phone line
- Support for kids and teens coming to terms with a parents diagnosis
- School educational outreach
- Personal development classes (like art therapy and mindfulness)
- Survivorship programmes
… so much more. They are incredible.
I’d love to raise as much money as I possibly can for this amazing service, in hopes that it will help others who are going through what me and my family went through. If you could throw a couple of euro, it won’t be wasted.
