I'm running the VHI mini marathon in an effort to raise money, but more importantly awareness about Bodywhys, The Eating Disorder Association of Ireland, which is a cause very close to my own heart. Lots of people nowadays talk about mental health and the importance of speaking up and seeking help, but I sometimes feel eating disorders go unrecognised in this regard. The World Health Organisation recognise eating disorders as a form of mental health disorders. In Ireland in 2016 eating disorders were the second highest cause of hospital admissions for children and adolescents, and 93% of these admissions were females. The HSE also estimates that 188,895 people in Ireland will experience an eating disorder at some point in their lives, yet only between 5-15% of people report seeking treatment. It is something that is unfortunately becoming more and more prevelant in our society and Bodywhys is an amazing national voluntary organisation supporting people affected by eating disorders. Their mission is to ensure support, awareness and understanding of eating disorders amongst the wider community as well as advocating for the rights and healthcare needs of people affected by eating disorders. So, even if you haven't got the few euro to spare, take the time to visit their website and educate yourself through their clear information and resources. Also, if you or someone you know is suffering from an eating disorder check out their website as there is lots of advice and tips (https://www.bodywhys.ie/)
Remember, your mental health is just as important as your physical health so do what you can do look after it.
