Until recently, I hadn't run in 3 years, when I ran my last Mini-Marathon. A week later I had my first miscarriage. 10 months later I had my 2nd miscarriage. I felt completely devastated. I didn't understand why I felt as upset as I did, after all, I had never met these babies and the miscarriages had happened fairly early on in the pregnancies, so I didn't feel justified in feeling as bad as I did. I felt I should be able to just get it together and move on with life. But I couldn't, for a long time. My family and friends were wonderfully supportive but there's a limit to how many times you can talk about it without worrying them or sounding like a cracked record.
It's at times like these that organisations like the Miscarriage Association of Ireland are invaluable. People who've been through it themselves and are there to listen to you and let you cry and support you.
I'm running this Mini-Marathon to raise money for the good work that they do and to highlight awareness of how prevalent miscarriage is (1 in 5 pregnancies in Ireland end in miscarriage) and how deeply miscarriage can affect people's lives. I'm also running it in memory of the two little babies that I never got to meet but will always remember.
