Spinal Injuries Ireland

Spinal injuries Ireland is Ireland's only specialised and dedicated support service working with people who have sustained a spinal cord injury (SCI) in Ireland and their families. We work with people from the point of injury, through each stage of recovery and rehabilitation how, when and for as long as they need us.

A spinal cord injury is noted to be one of the most devastating injuries an individual can sustain by the World Health Organisation. An SCI can result in paralysis, chronic pain, reduced organ function, mental distress and a whole plethora of new challenges relating to mobility, accessibility, health-care, relationships and all aspects of every day life. SII work with people and families to actively support them navigate the challenges in their new hope, focus on what is possible and achieve a fulfilling life in their communities.

overview

Spinal Injuries Ireland was founded in 1993 to provide support and outreach services to people with spinal cord injuries. Spinal Injuries Ireland currently has over 2100 members nationwide who each engage with our services dependent on their needs and goals. SII aims to be reliably and consistently there for our service users and their families, for as long as they need us.

The majority of spinal cord injuries occur as a result of road traffic, sporting and workplace accidents, leaving previously active people fighting to rebuild their lives while at the same time coming to terms with the reality of life in a wheelchair.

On average, 3 people per week sustain a spinal cord injury in Ireland. Spinal Injuries Ireland begins to work with the patient during their stay in hospital through to returning home to their communities. It is here where our services users and families say support becomes really essential as there are sadly gaps in our health services for those readjusting to life after such life-changing injuries.

It is estimated that we those who need SII's services will rise from 2100 in 2019 to 3600 in 2023. With this we need to constantly raise the funds needed to maintain and develop our services, now and in the future. We are dedicated to ensuring that no person with a spinal cord injury in Ireland will ever suffer alone.
